What will we be doing?

We will be focusing our work on poverty and homelessness and issues that surround these challenges. Our work will include a variety of partners throughout the week. We will be working with LA’s Best tutoring children. Other service projects will focus on educational and medical inequities which relate to our focus on poverty and homelessness issues.

LA’s Best: Established in 1988, LA’s Best is a nationally recognized after school education, enrichment and recreation program serving more than 28,000 children with the greatest needs and fewest resources throughout the City of Los Angeles. LA's BEST After School Enrichment Program provides a safe haven for children, ages 5 to 12, at 180 elementary school sites each day during the critical hours after school — at no cost to parents.

LA's BEST programs are located at Los Angeles Unified School District elementary school campuses throughout the City of Los Angeles. LA's BEST sites are located in the most underserved areas of the City of Los Angeles in neighborhoods vulnerable to crime and gang activity and at schools with the lowest student test scores. Each day after school LA's BEST provides its students with homework assistance, a cognitively based enrichment activity (i.e. science club, math club, literacy activity), a fun recreation activity of their choosing (i.e., dance, sports, art, cooking), and a nutritious snack.

Groups will be involved in tutoring students ranging from elementary school to high school  at these sites for 4-5 hours/day for 3-4 days.

Santa Monica Homeless:

Homeless Shelter work will include: Preparing and serving food, packing in warehouse, work on shelter, interaction with homeless where possible.  Groups will be at this site for 4-5 hours/day for 3-4 days.

A Sample Day on the Trip:

7:00 AM – Wake up and eat breakfast. On bus by 8:30AM.

9:00 AM - 1:00 PM – Combination of service work, guest speakers, peer group discussions

2:00 PM – 6:00 PM – LA’s Best – work with educationally at-risk students in schools. Our work will focus on various opportunities including tutoring, supporting peer mediation, college prep work, immigrant children, and after school programs

After our service work we will have the chance to take advantage of the wonderful attractions and opportunities that LA has to offer. Some evening will be spent out in LA.  Some possible destinations will include: the Third Street Promenade, Santa Monica Pier, Downtown Disney District, and the beach in Malibu.  On other nights, we'll hear from interesting speakers, advocates, and young professionals who are making a difference in the LA community.

Program Overview:

LA Uncovered Alternative Break is an expansion of Hillel’s social justice work in the United States. In recognition of the many communities in the United States in need of volunteer support, and understanding the tremendous impact that each volunteer makes in the lives of so many in need, we will provide support to community members in the Los Angeles area. Each day will be spent participating in intense hands-on volunteer work and during evenings participants will enjoy some of what the Los Angeles area has to offer, meet with community members, delve into socio-economic issues, and have the opportunity to reflect and explore Jewish Values.
