During the Trip
What is the work like? We will be focusing our work on poverty and homelessness and issues that surround these challenges. Our work will include a variety of partners throughout the week. We will be working with LA’s Best tutoring children. Other service projects will focus on educational and medical Inequities which relate to our focus on poverty and homelessness issues.
LA’s Best: Established in 1988, LA’s Best is a nationally recognized after school education, enrichment and recreation program serving more than 28,000 children with the greatest needs and fewest resources throughout the City of Los Angeles. LA's BEST After School Enrichment Program provides a safe haven for children, ages 5 to 12, at 180 elementary school sites each day during the critical hours after school — at no cost to parents.
LA's BEST programs are located at Los Angeles Unified School District elementary school campuses throughout the City of Los Angeles. LA's BEST sites are located in the most underserved areas of the City of Los Angeles in neighborhoods vulnerable to crime and gang activity and at schools with the lowest student test scores. Each day after school LA's BEST provides its students with homework assistance, a cognitively based enrichment activity (i.e. science club, math club, literacy activity), a fun recreation activity of their choosing (i.e., dance, sports, art, cooking), and a nutritious snack.
Groups will work at these sites for 4-5 hours/day for 3-4 days
Do I need to be skilled in the above? Participants will be trained on-site in all areas of work.
What are the accommodations like? A place called Camp JCA Shalom in Malibu. Camp accommodations i.e. – cabins with bathrooms, communal dining hall, and camp activities – swimming, sports, etc. The camp is 5 miles from the ocean and about 45 minutes outside of Los Angeles.
Are there any expenses while on the trip that I am responsible for? Except for 2 nights out in LA, all food, accommodation and travel are covered. For the 2 nights out, $20-$30 for food, souvenirs and other related costs is recommended.
What if I get sick? Do I need my own medical insurance? If you get sick during the break, doctors and hospitals are available. It is necessary to have your own health insurance. Please see the application for details on health insurance.
What if I am unable to go at the last minute? It is your responsibility to notify Hillel as soon as you are aware that you are unable to attend by sending an email to information@campusinitiative.org. Refund of fees will be dependent on the withdrawal date. There will be no refunds after February 22, 2009.
What happens in case of an emergency? Participants will be provided in advance with contact information for their local Hillel and the accommodations in which they will be staying on the program. Each campus will be assigned a local emergency contact while participants are on the trip. Please call your campus Hillel to reach the local emergency contact.
