Program, Free Time, and Other Information

Where is the program taking place this year?
Los Angeles, California

What are the dates of the program?
March 22 – 28, 2009. Please note that the trip will conclude after the end of Shabbat on March 28th.

Where will we stay?
A place called Camp JCA Shalom in Malibu. Camp accommodations i.e. – cabins with bathrooms, communal dining hall, and camp activities – swimming, sports, etc. The camp is 5 miles from the ocean and about 45 minutes outside of Los Angeles.

Who will we be working with?
We will be focusing our work on poverty and homelessness and issues that surround these challenges. Our work will include a variety of partners throughout the week. We will be working with LA’s Best tutoring children. Other service projects will focus on educational and medical Inequities which relate to our focus on poverty and homelessness issues.

What will the food be like?
All food will be kosher. Most meals will be vegetarian.

What happens on Shabbat?
Shabbat is observed as a community beginning at sunset on Friday and lasting until sunset on Saturday. There are many options ranging from traditional prayer to yoga to drum circles. No work project is scheduled on Saturday but students may be creative in designing Shabbat to reflect their interests.
