Program, Free Time, and Other Information
Where is the program taking place this year? Tampa, Florida
Why are we going to Tampa? Tampa is home to a diverse population that has experienced dramatic change in the past 10 years. With the transformation of the city, the success of its sports teams, and its reputation as a popular vacation destination for young adults and families alike, the socio-economic and environmental issues Tampa battles go virtually unknown. The poverty level has risen as high as 25.7% amongst some its minority populations and over 10% of households (over 40,000 families) in the city do not have enough food to eat on a daily basis. Tampa is also threatened by pollution and waste which significantly impacts local wildlife, beaches, and swamplands.
What are the dates of the program? March 15 – 22, 2009
Where will we stay? We will be staying at a place called Camp Cedar Kirk. Camp accommodations i.e. – cabins with bathrooms, communal dining hall, and camp activities – swimming, sports, etc. The camp is about 30 minutes outside of Tampa.
What will the food be like? All food will be kosher. Most meals will be vegetarian.
Who will we be working with? We will be working with Rebuilding Together Tampa Bay and the Tampa Bay Watch. [Note: Please do not contact these organizations directly.]
What does a typical schedule of a day look like? How much will we work? Wake up Breakfast Work site Lunch Work site Reflection/debrief of work Dinner Evening Activity
What happens on Shabbat? Shabbat is observed as a community beginning at sunset on Friday and lasting until sunset on Saturday. There are many options ranging from traditional prayer to yoga to drum circles. No work project is scheduled on Saturday but students may be creative in designing Shabbat to reflect their interests.
