Why Tampa?
Tampa is home to a diverse population that has experienced dramatic change in the past 10 years. With the transformation of the city, the success of its sports teams, and its reputation as a popular vacation destination for young adults and families alike, the socio-economic and environmental issues Tampa battles go virtually unknown. The poverty level has risen as high as 25.7% amongst some its minority populations and over 10% of households (over 40,000 families) in the city do not have enough food to eat on a daily basis. Tampa is also threatened by pollution and waste which significantly impacts local wildlife, beaches, and swampland.
What will we be doing?
We will be working with Rebuilding Together and Tampa Bay Watch during the week.
Rebuilding Together: Rebuilding Together’s mission is to Repair the Homes of those in need. Rebuilding Together Tampa Bay (RTTB) intends to preserve and revitalize houses and communities, in the Tampa Bay Area, assuring that low-income homeowners live in warmth, safety and independence. There is an increasing need for residential housing rehabilitation programs to improve living conditions for very low and low income families, especially those of senior citizens and persons with disabilities.
RTTB's goal is to preserve affordable home-ownership and reduce substandard housing through working partnership with corporations and county and city governments. RTTB was born out of a fundamental belief that all people deserve to live in safe and decent housing. RTTB assists existing low-income homeowners by providing necessary repairs free of charge. These necessary repairs often include home modifications, roofing, plumbing, and electrical repairs and other improvements.
Groups will work at these sites for 5-6 hours/day for 3-4 days
Tampa Bay Watch: Tampa Bay Watch focuses on restoring and protecting the Tampa Bay wetlands. Students will spend half a day on the beaches of Tampa doing cleanup work.
Groups will spend one day at these sites for 3 – 5 hours
Participants will also spend 1 full day on Caladesi Island along Florida’s Gulf Coast. Caladesi´s white sand shores have been rated as the nation´s #1 best beach. You’ll have the chance to enjoy the Florida sand and sun after a week of work.
A Sample Day on the trip:
7:00 AM – Wake up and eat breakfast. On bus by 8:30AM.
9:00 AM - 3:00 PM Rebuilding Together - Thanks to the Super Bowl being in Tampa this year, there has been more interest in helping those in need in this urban area. We will work with RTTB for the week on one square block, painting, framing and putting up dry wall. Participants will also have the opportunity to meet the residents of the neighborhood we'll be working in.
Each day after the service work we will return to the camp for dinner and planned evening programs which may include speakers and learning/reflection and social activities. Two evenings will be spent out on the town - one night will be spent at Ybor City (more details to follow).
Program Overview:
Tampa Uncovered Alternative Break is an expansion of Hillel’s social justice work in the United States. In recognition of the many communities in the United States in need of volunteer support, and understanding the tremendous impact that each volunteer makes in the lives of so many in need, we will provide support to both community members and environmental agencies in the Tampa, Florida area. Each day will be spent waking early to participate in intense hands-on volunteer work and spending evenings enjoying some of what Tampa has to offer, meeting with community members, delving into socio-economic and environmental issues, reflection and exploration of Jewish values. The group will also spend time at the beach, doing both volunteer work one day and relaxing and enjoying another.
